Hi Sarah, Definitely something I've noticed in several locations, too. Generally, the sentiment associated with the eye-rolling has arisen from the question, "What about the follow-up?" I've appreciated "communal discernment," if the process is in fact that and spans several conversations/gatherings. If it is more about seeking information, then "spiritual conversation" and a simple "evening of prayer and discussion" have can work well. That said, I've seen these work best with young adults who are active or who have been active; they certainly have not proved to be great "on-boarding" exercises. The strength here is that young adults will have an opportunity to exercise agency in setting direction after they have shared their experiences, which will give them confidence that what they share will have impact. Identifying that up front or during the gathering can sustain participation. Hope it goes well, and I hope that I haven't given you information you already have!
